After Jennifer Abma found her young daughter suffering from heatstroke in her own bedroom, she took to social media to share her terrifying story. She typed out a Facebook post and shared a photo of her daughter, Anastasia, to warn other parents about the possibilities of heatstroke.
In her Facebook post, Jennifer explains that her daughter put herself down for a nap. When Jennifer went to check on her some time later, she found her daughter “soaked in sweat, red faced and boiling.”
Terrified, Jennifer tried to wake her young daughter. When she was unable to wake her, she called an ambulance. Jennifer wrote, “This was my evening, this was the scariest moment I’ve had to imagine.this is severe heatstroke. There is nothing scarier than not being able to wake your baby up. This is clear proof a child doesn’t need to be in the sun to get heat stroke.”
Jennifer continued, “It took us 20 minutes to wake her up, when ambulance came, they came with investigators because they didn’t know what to expect. This was proof how fast things change.”
While Anastasia had not been outside in the sun, her bedroom was extremely hot. Jennifer explained, “I had no idea how hot her bedroom was until I went to wake her up soaked in sweat, red face, boiling and unable to wake her for 15 minutes, ambulance arrived faster then I could have ever imagined and took her sugars which were 1.2 and should be above four. [Paramedics] administered sucrose and in minutes she started crying, clearly scared.”
Jennifer, a mother of two, posted her story to warn other parents that heatstroke can occur even if their children aren’t out in the sun. She wrote, “This is a lesson learnt and hopefully other parents can take something from this and make sure you are checking the rooms in your house because they can be as dangerous as a hot car.”
The post has been shared over 11,000 times. Many Facebook users were shocked that children could develop heatstroke indoors and thanked Jennifer for sharing her story.
