Imagine buying a bag of fresh, organic spring mix at the grocery store, then taking it out of the refrigerator at home and prepping a delicious salad. Just as you sit down to take a bite, you notice a chunk of something that doesn’t look like it should be in there. Now think of one of the worst things that misplaced item could be.

After a consumer in Florida reported finding a dead animal in a packaged salad mix, two people were recommended for post-exposure rabies treatment. So what was found inside a bag of Fresh Express Organic Marketside Spring Mix? A dead bat.

The bat was sent to the CDC, who commented, “The deteriorated condition of the bat did not allow for CDC to definitively rule out whether this bat had rabies.”

The CDC explained the risk of rabies transmission was low, but the risk was still present. Two people who ate the salad mix were recommended for treatment as a precaution against rabies.

Fresh Express Organic Marketside Spring Mix Recall

On April 8, Fresh Express recalled packages of salad mix that were sold at Walmart stores in the following states:

  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Virginia

If you bought this product from a local Walmart store in any of these states, check the product code and best-if-used-by date to make sure your food is safe. Here’s what you’re looking for:

  • The affected product has a production code of G089B19.
  • It contains a best-if-used-by date of Apr 14, 2017 on the front label.
  • The affected product contains a UPC code of 6 8113132897 5 on the bottom of the container.

In a statement, Fresh Express explained, “Upon receiving notification, both Walmart and Fresh Express food safety and rapid response teams, in close coordination with regulatory authorities, acted immediately to review all relevant records, launch an intensive investigation and initiate product removal and recall procedures.”

The Florida Department of Health, US Food and Drug Administration and CDC are working together on an investigation into the dead bat. So far, no one has been reported sick.
