GMO Un-Labeling DARK Act: What You NEED to Know!

What does GMO labeling have to do with Planned Parenthood?

As far as I can tell, there is no connection.

But that isn’t stopping individuals in the U.S. government from trying to amend a controversial GMO labeling act to S.764, the Defund Planned Parenthood Bill.

At first glance, it seems like some sort of error.

But with a little bit of digging, it becomes clear that the lawmakers responsible know exactly what they’re doing.

You see, S.764 was passed in the Senate last year. Any minor changes to a bill that has been passed – such as an amendment – go through a relatively short approval process.

Essentially, Representative Mike Pompeo – the man behind the controversial “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act” – and supporters are trying to use a completely unrelated bill as a vehicle for their own interests.

And why exactly does Rep. Pompeo care about GMO labeling?

Well, those who would stand the most to lose from GMO labeling are some of Pompeo’s biggest supporters.

Since 1989, he has been given more than $170,000 from agricultural business corporations and $81,000 from the food and beverage industry.

But both of those numbers pale in comparison to the check written by well-known anti-GMO-labeling firm Koch Industries. From them, Pompeo has received $238,900.

In return, Pompeo is making it easier for food companies to get away with keeping consumers in the dark about GMOs.

How The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act Works

In a nutshell, that's pretty much it.

In a nutshell, that’s pretty much it.

On July 1, Vermont became the first state in the country to require GMO labels in all grocery stores.

Food manufacturers aren’t happy about that. They’ve been pushing the government to not only revoke that law but make it impossible for other states to follow suit as well.

Amendment of the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act is how they’re planning to do that.

The amendment, which was approved by the Senate and House of Representatives earlier this month, imposes a federal law that overrides any state law regarding GMOs.

The act allows food companies to avoid actually telling consumers their products contain GMOs by attaching the warnings to QR codes instead.

Consumers would have no clear way of knowing the product in question contained GMOs without pulling out their smartphones and using a QR reader app.

What You Can Do

Although the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act amendment has moved past the Senate and House of Representatives, it still needs to be signed by President Obama before it goes into effect.

Right now, it looks like Obama will be pushing the movement forward.

But that’s not exactly in line with the public’s wishes. More than 90% of Americans support the labeling of GMO products.

Right now that 90% has a chance to make their wishes known. Have a look at this petition which implores Obama to reject the amendment.

If you agree that GMOs should be labeled, sign and share it.
