If you’ve shopped at Walmart recently, you might want to check your freezer. The company has issued a major recall due to contamination that could leave you and your family members seriously sick.
Walmart issued a recall for frozen pizzas sold under the company’s Marketside brand. The recall came after the brand announced a potential listeria contamination. 21,220 pounds of Marketside’s Extra Large Supreme Pizza were recalled, containing the product code 20547.
According to the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service, the recalled products are labeled with the established number “EST. 1821” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail distribution centers in California, Nevada, Utah and Washington.
Routine sampling by the firm found the contamination problem. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of sickness due to the consumption of these products.
The Dangers Of Listeriosis
Consuming food that is contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause a serious infection known as listeriosis. According to the CDC, an estimated 1,600 people contract listeriosis each year. About 260 people die from the infection. Listeriosis is most likely to affect pregnant women, newborns, adults aged 65 and older and people with a weakened immune system.
Listeriosis symptoms vary, depending on the person and the part of the body that has been affected. If the infection becomes invasive, it spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, listeriosis can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or a life-threatening infection of the newborn. In older adults and people with a weakened immune system, other symptoms include:
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Stiff Neck
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
Check Your Freezer
The USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service urges you to check for these frozen pizzas in your home. Walmart estimates that about 6,700 pizzas were sold. The pizzas were sold in 50.6 ounce boxes containing a single 16-inch pizza labeled “Marketside Extra Large Supreme Pizza.” If you find this Marketside frozen pizza in your freezer with the established number “EST. 1821,” or a product code of 20547, throw it away immediately.
