Most of us love bumper stickers. It is a great way to individualize our vehicles and to show some team, family, or school pride. However, all this information is easy to see and could lead to a big problem.
Let’s start with those family stickers. Many people like to personalize them with names, interests, or even occupations. This gives potential child abductors and robbers the information they need to plan a heist or kidnapping.
People can learn your child’s name from the back of your car. Add in some interests, and anyone can see you probably won’t be home after school. It is also pretty easy to figure out where your children will be. The locations of local soccer fields and hockey rinks are heavily advertised. When a kidnapper knows a child’s name, it is much easier to convince the child the person has been sent there to pick the child up.
Occupations give a robber a general income amount which could make you a target. For example, a sticker with a doctor or a dentist’s logo or clipart could mean the family makes a lot of money.
Even honor student stickers can be dangerous. They clearly broadcast what school your children go to and where they can be found.
Police recommend you avoid personalized bumper stickers. That little step could be all you need to keep your family and your home safe.
