You probably know that American tap water is far from fresh spring water. It’s known to contain a wide range of toxins that have negative impacts on your health. That’s why Westport Elementary School in Modesto, California, uses a water filtration device to make sure their water is safe for children to drink.
The Elementary School says that up to one pound of uranium is filtered through the device each year. The uranium is retrieved by workers in masks, gloves and other protective gear, then sent to a nuclear power plant.
Sacramento CBS reported, “The school, which draws on its own wells for its drinking fountains, sinks and cafeteria, is one of about 10 water systems in the farm region that have installed uranium removal facilities in recent years. Prices range from $65,000 for the smallest system to the millions of dollars.”
They continued, “Just off Westport’s playground, a school maintenance chief jangles the keys to the school’s treatment operation, locked in a shed the size of a garage. Inside, a system of tubes, dials and canisters resembling large scuba tanks removes up to a pound a year of uranium from the school’s wells.”
The rural communities around Modesto have also noticed a uranium contamination in their problem. The North Highlands McClellan Airforce Base, which closed in 2001, is thought to be responsible for poisoning the North Highlands and Rio Linda water with chromium 6, a highly carcinogenic material.

California residents aren’t the only ones who have to worry about dangerous chemicals in their tap water. American tap water is known to contain many toxins, including lead, mercury, fluoride, chlorine and arsenic. Tap water is typically treated with a large number of chemicals in order to kill bacteria, so it may also contain hormones, nitrates and pesticides.
