If you haven’t heard of fidget spinners, you may or may not be living under a rock. The popular toys recently hit the market in a big way. They were originally created to help children with anxiety, ADHD and autism, but kids all over the country became eager to get their hands on them. One father is now speaking out about the dangers of fidget spinners, after his son was injured by the popular toy.

John’s Story

John Harris shared a Facebook post about a terrifying incident involving his son and a fidget spinner to warn other parents about the potential dangers. After watching YouTube videos of people using compressed air to make a fidget spinner spin extremely fast, he decided to try it out with his son. But the seemingly harmless trick didn’t go as planned.

Harris wrote, “I know this point isn’t gonna be easy for some to look at, but I felt it was necessary.” He shared a bloody photo of his son’s face along with the post.

He continued, “This was caused from playing with a fidget spinner and compressed air (air compressor) spraying across it. I was holding the spinner and the air hose when it happened. We had been playing with it for a while and all of a sudden the plastic on the fidget spinner exploded. We are at the ER now waiting to have stitches. I am sharing so no one else has the same stupid idea that I had. We were lucky it missed his eyes. It could have been much worse.”

Harris said his son ended up with 30 stitches inside and around his mouth after the accident. His post stirred up mixed feelings from other Facebook users. One person commented, “This accident was caused by not using the spinner the proper way, anything can be dangerous if you don’t follow instructions.”

Another Facebook user commented, “They are not intended to be toys!!! They are intended for people like me, with ADHD, that need things in out hands all the time.” Another comment read, “If people would quit misusing them, this stuff would not happen. I have one and I won’t let my daughter play with it.”
