A woman paranoid about turning 50 died after using fat burning pills and cream, leaving behind four children and her husband. Linda Baranowski was taking weight loss pills, drinking slimming tea and rubbing a chili-based cream on her legs, arms and stomach. The products ultimately led to her death.
Linda was using Yili Balo hot chili anti-cellulite slimming cream along with T5 fat burn tablets produced by the same Chinese factory. She was also drinking Himalayan green and white tea bags that she purchased from a seller on Facebook.
After a few weeks of using the products, she began experiencing stomach pains. Her skin turned purple and started to blister where she had applied the cream. Linda collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where she stayed for five weeks. Doctors tried to save her life, but her organs were failing.
Linda developed burns that caused her skin to peel off. She was transferred to the burn unit, but she was pronounced dead after her intestines suddenly ruptured.
Consultant Niall Martin, a specialist in the burn unit, said the burns were the worst in the areas where Linda had applied the cream. “If you can imagine having cream between your fingers and then wiping it under your arm onto your back. The pattern [of burns] were worst in areas which you could reach with your hands,” he said.
Weight Loss Products Ruled Cause Of Death
Martin explained that the horrific burning was a result of the weight loss products Linda had been using. Coroner Geoffrey Sullivan agreed that the products were most likely to blame for her death.
“It’s likely that Linda Baranowski died as a result of an inflammatory reaction to dietary supplements she was using in the lead-up to her death,” he said. “While there have been reports of skin agents being used by those kinds of slimming gels, they’re not aware of any deaths that have occurred in these circumstances, But, given the likely cause of death I remain concerned that these products are still on sale.”
Linda’s husband, Mark, shared his concern about the products. “I think there needs to be bigger awareness of the products that are out there,” he said. “The waters are very murky surrounding these things so of course I think they need regulating.”
On her mother’s memorial page, Michaela Baranowski wrote, “Like a lot of us mum wanted to lose some weight although she was a stunningly beautiful woman with a figure to match. She was talked into buying a health bundle which contained fat-burners, skin-tightening gel and green and white tea – the combination of the skin-tightening cream and fat-burners was the cause of my mum’s death.”
