A mother is mourning the sudden loss of her daughter after taking her for a dental procedure. A three-year-old girl died Monday in Stockton, California at the Children’s Dental Surgery Center while she was having two teeth removed and two teeth capped. Pictures taken in the dental office just before the procedure show Daleyza Avila-Hernandez looking healthy and playful.
An ambulance arrived at the surgery center about a half hour after Daleyza had been taken back for her procedure. Her mother, Araceli Avila, said, “All I did was I took my daughter to the dentist because they were going to fix her teeth and about 30 minutes later they brought her back dead.”
She explained, “When I was in the waiting room, I saw the ambulance. I stood up to see and I thought to myself they are here for a child but never thought it was my child.”
David Thompson, administrator at Children’s Dental Surgery Center, said, “This is not an easy thing to deal with. I’ve been doing this for almost ten years now; I’ve never had a situation like this.”
A nurse’s assistant told Araceli that her daughter’s heart had stopped during the procedure. She suggested that the three-year-old may have had some underlying condition that had gone undetected. Araceli was outraged by the suggestion.
Avila said, “The nurse said my daughter’s heart stopped, but she was stable and not to worry and told me my daughter has heart problems that maybe I didn’t know of, but that’s not true. My daughter was very healthy.”
The Stockton Police Department is investigating the little girl’s death, but they do not consider it to be suspicious or a criminal case. Avila doesn’t understand how a trip to the dentist could end her daughter’s life. “I hope what has happened to me doesn’t happen to another mother,” she said.
Some wonder if anesthesia was the cause of her death. According to CBS Sacramento:
The dental center specializes in treatments under general anesthesia. Administrators couldn’t confirm if that was part of the little girl’s procedure but did tell CBS13 both a dentist and anesthesiologist- along with a nurse and two assistants- are present in the rooms during a procedure.
